Dresses at a bargain in Elgin
Piyush Patel found himself in an unusual role Saturday, casting “yes” or “no” votes as his wife tried on dress after dress at the YWCA in Elgin. The pair was shopping at Cindy’s Super Saturday Gown Sale, which featured about 3,000 dresses for women of all ages and sizes. “Now I am a fashion consultant, later I will be a cashier,” Patel joked. He and his wife, Gopi Patel, said they were impressed by the variety of dresses and their near-pristine condition. A few new dresses were also for sale.
“And they are only $25! It’s for a good cause, so if she wears them two times only, it’s still a good price,” Piyush Patel said. The gown sale was organized by the YWCA and the Elgin Junior Service Board, and all of its proceeds will go toward funding the annual Cinderella’s Closet, which next year takes place March 17. Cinderella’s Closet is a prom dress event for high school girls.
The selection of about 3,000 dresses couldn’t help but tempt her, too, said YWCA event coordinator Deirdre White, a past president of the Elgin Junior Service Board. She had picked out a forest green, strapless silk organza dress to wear that same night at a cocktail event at The Centre of Elgin.Feel fabulous when the party season arrives in beautiful dresses from Eva Alexander.Another satisfied customer was Larkin High School senior Allison Chmiola, who had volunteered to help set up the sale — now in its second year — and had set aside three long dresses and several short dresses. As for how many she’d walk away with, well, it would all depend on what her mother was willing to buy her, Allison said smiling.
Despite the rainbow of colors available, sometimes you just can’t find what you want, said Gloria Serrano of Carpentersville, who was looking for a dress for her 15th birthday party in January. “It’s a certain blue that I wanted, I just didn’t see it,” she said.

Fashion Houston: 5 questions with Barbara Tfank
Los Angeles-based Barbara Tfank showed her Elizabeth Taylor-inspired collection on opening night of Fashion Houston. The event continues with fashion shows through Thursday at Wortham Theater Center for ticket information.
We caught up with Tfank after the show:
Your collections are show in New York and Los Angeles, why come to Fashion Houston
There’s so much energy here, and people enjoy getting dressed up. That’s the type of clothes I design.
What’s it like designing for famous women, like the curvaceous singer, Adele?Vogue asked me to design a Grammy Awards’ dress for Adele. She was 19 at the time. I can’t even count how many wedding dresses I’ve done for her. I am really happy to be able to help shape her image. Adele has empowered a lot of young women, showing them that you can have style and sophistication regardless of your size. Adele is very happy with who she is.
And what about working with First Lady Michelle Obama? The First Lady wore one of my dresses for the Wounded Warrior Project. It was such a poignant occasion. To see her among the troops in this floral dress, looking like a beautiful blossom, was such an honor.
Are your clothes New York or LA?My clothes are really more New York. People are starting to buy them in LA, but they are dressy. In LA, people are either in jeans or gowns. I try to set an example. I’m not going to dress down just because everyone else does.
Are you pleased that ladylike fashions have returned? The pendulum has turned toward me, and I’m glad of that. I hear this all across the country: Women want femininity. People are embracing feminine curves. That makes me happy.
“There a few big names in the fashion industry that are notorious for ‘sampling’ the models before they took the job. Basically, it comes down to a choice of whether you are willing to throw your principles overboard to accelerate your career,” said former model Ariane Sommer. “It becomes more problematic, however, if the model in question is extremely young and impressionable. These girls often don’t know how to stand up for themselves and are like a deer in the headlights.”

Feel fabulous when the party season arrives in beautiful dresses from Eva Alexander
Dressing for special occasions while pregnant can be daunting. Women want to be beautiful, sexy, sophisticated, glamorous, and for good measure let’s throw-in jaw-droppingly gorgeous as well. But pregnancy brings with it a new body and a new look. Opening the closet, throwing on that classic little black dress with the Christian Louboutin’s and running out the door just isn’t an option anymore.
Fortunately, there are now a number of maternity design houses creating gorgeous designer maternity wear in innovative styles and beautiful fabrics inspired by this season’s catwalk. These maternity formal dresses will turn heads with every step. Designed to create stunning, figure flattering and sexy silhouettes in the first, second and third trimester’s, evening maternity wear has never looked so good.
Understanding that women want to look and feel beautiful when going out, formal maternity dresses are no longer just made out of viscose or cotton T-shirt material, but out of silks, satins, sequins and other creative combinations of luxury fabrics in rich eye-catching colour palettes to celebrate the holidays and special occasions. For this holiday season it’s the jewel tones that everyone will want to be seen in!
When looking for maternity dress clothes a woman should embrace her new curves and look for features that will highlight her new attributes. Empire waists create a sexy feminine silhouette and low necklines accentuate her new cleavage particularily for an evening maternity dress. For women who naturally have a fuller figure, a soft v-neck can be a more slimming look by drawing the eye to the centre of her body. Women who are looking to show off their new bump should look for a well designed ruched dress. These dresses are perfect for creating a sexy feminine silhouette that accentuates a woman’s new curves in all the right places.
There is something about being pregnant that makes a woman want a bit more colour in her wardrobe. When looking for a touch of colour but versatility is a necessity, a good maternity wrap dress can be worn throughout a pregnancy and for many years thereafter. A maternity wrap dress will always be flattering on naturally curvy women and women with a little extra on the tummy because the empire waist emphasises the smallest part of the torso while draping over the tummy to create an attractive and slimming look.

Her pillowcase dresses clothe girls worldwide
The girls, glowing with smiles, wear bright dresses in all colors of the rainbow. Neatly tied ribbons serve as slim straps above the cool, soft cotton. These girls are in St. John, Haiti, Uganda, Romania and India. These dresses are made from pillowcases.Lisa Ward of Mooresville - together with family, friends, a passion to serve and Facebook as facilitator - has made and delivered more than 614 dresses to girls in five different countries.
Between 400 and 500 more dresses will be delivered to India, Uganda and Haiti later this year, said Ward, who is the N.C. representative for Dress a Girl Around the World.
Hope 4 Women International's Dress a Girl Around the World is a not-for-profit agency. Members sew pillowcase dresses for the agency to distribute. Teams and partners personally carry the dresses to their destinations. The organization has delivered about 46,717 dresses to 53 countries, including the U.S.
Ward's journey began in March 2011 after she read a news article posted on Facebook about a local church that, inspired by Dress a Girl, was delivering dresses to Haiti. Ward wanted to help after hearing how the dresses would benefit girls affected by the 2010 earthquake. She contacted Rachel Eggum Cinader, founder of Dress a Girl. Cinader invited her to be N.C. representative for the organization. Ward started sewing with her family's blessing.
On May 24, Ward posted to Facebook: "Please check out this website.I will be the N.C. state representative for this organization and help collect, teach and distribute dresses around the world with this organization. So exciting! Our goal at Hope 4 Women International is "to provide a dress for every girl around the world."
"Facebook friends came out of the woodwork," she said. The first 200 dresses she sewed were made from collections she received from Facebook friends and family. They were sent to a missionary in Haiti. The Wards' living room recently served as temporary storage for a community yard sale the family hosted to raise money for Ward herself to make trips to Uganda and India to deliver dresses and teach women to sew. The master bedroom is now sewing headquarters.
The sewing center is highly organized in a colorful assembly-line system. Piles of pillowcases and ribbon are neatly stacked and folded on the two tables that form an L-shape around Ward and her sewing machine. She has pre-matched each stack so it's ready to be sewn. Piles of finished dresses line the floor.

How Long-Term Travel Turned Me Into A Minimalist
Living out of a backpack for a year really does change you. It changed me: I'm a born-again minimalist.During my year-plus churn through South America and Europe, I lived out of a small black backpack. I loved having so few possessions, just a few outfits, a tiny netbook, a camera, a nightgown, and reading materials on my iPhone.
Now that I'm back in the States, I'm on a continual stuff diet. I want only books that feel current, shampoo that doesn't make my hair frizzy, clothes I wear and love, towels that feel good. Losing stuff is like losing weight. It's a long-term process.
My purge began almost two years ago when I decided to go on a walkabout for four months in Brazil. Four months turned into more than a year of traveling and hanging out getting to know people and places in Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina. That's a longer story that I am writing in memoir form. Before I leapt into travel mode, I had been living in a San Francisco apartment for four years with two roommates. Four years equals a lot of stuff!
Moving always caused me to sink into temporary holes of depression. The process always seemed more emotional than seemed warranted. I was forced to stare at things I acquired in the heat of the moment and then see them with fresh eyes.Chinese flair important to wedding dress designer. What is this junk and why do I have to pack it up with me? This cheap costume wig that is so mangled I can't even comb it, this unflattering schwag t-shirt? I could think of one thing with value: a juicer that could easily juice a beet. If my stuff was a reflection of life, my life seemed to be filled with junk. Thus began the purge that continues to this day.
I began in Brazil with a bloated bag of dresses and skirts and quickly realized the weight was too much. I spent $80 to send clothes back. (Advice for anyone embarking on long-term travel: Don't worry about clothing. Shoes are a different story, but you will get the appropriate clothing anywhere you go and understand better what you actually need.)
Now that I'm back in the States—and considering future adventures abroad—I want to remain buoyant and light. I think wistfully back to the days when there was so little laundry to do. I bundled up the bag more frequently but it wasn't so laborious and heavy.

Chinese flair important to wedding dress designer
In the world of fashion, a well-known name on a garment can be the key to success. But what makes the works of the wedding dress designer Tsai Meiyue stand out is the signature she leaves on her works in - Chinese characters. Some of her business partners in Western companies have suggested she ditch the Chinese in favour of the Latin alphabet to give her brand bigger Western exposure, but Tsai refuses to budge.
"My wedding dress is Chinese styled, and Chinese characters represent the Chinese style," she said. "I think they are a perfect combination."
For Tsai, born in Taiwan, making wedding dresses with a Chinese touch has been a lifetime pursuit. She now has seven shops throughout China, each garment with its unique design and fabric, and ranging in price from 500 yuan ($78) to 10,000 yuan. But there is one constant: the Chinese look. That has not stopped her looking elsewhere for inspiration. For example, she believes that combining Chinese elements with a white wedding gown will bring out the most alluring aspects of those elements. How to Piss Everyone Off at the Nigh Club?
Some people regard traditional Chinese things as old-fashioned, she said, but she does not see it that way and is happy to dip into 5,000 years of history in her quest for beauty.
She is enchanted by ancient China's architecture, particularly engraved patterns on windows and doors, and has been trying to add these patterns to her wedding dresses. She also uses Chinese embroidery, relying on clothes woven by her own factory.
"Chinese embroidery can bring Chinese flavors to wedding dresses, so they can be more attached to Chinese consumers, and in recent years they have raised eyebrows internationally."I am sure dresses with traditional Chinese elements will lead world fashion trends for wedding dresses."For the moment, her goal is to let every Chinese bride have a wedding dress adorned with the beauty of Chinese elements.
"Almost 90 percent of the world's wedding dresses come from China, but we do not have a brand of our own. China's embroidery techniques are far more advanced than those of Western countries. Why should we be satisfied with only doing OEM (original equipment manufacturing)?"
